Assosa University has taken a major step toward strengthening road safety in Ethiopia by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ethiopian Road Safety and Insurance Fund Service, the Ethiopian Federal Police Commission, the Benishangul Gumuz Regional State Police Commission, and the BGRS Road and Transport Bureau.
The agreement brings together the expertise of these institutions to collaborate on research, capacity building, technology innovation, and policy advisory.
The partnership will focus on tackling critical road safety challenges such as accident black spot analysis, road user behavior, infrastructure design, and urban planning. It also aims to develop and implement evidence-based interventions, enhance the skills of professionals and students through joint training programs, workshops, seminars, and internships, and build a robust national road safety information system by facilitating the sharing of data and technical expertise.
On the MOU signing ceremony, Dr. Abdulmuhsin Hassen, Vice President for Assosa University Research and Technology Transfer, welcomed the delegation and highlighted the university’s role as an applied science institution.
Accordingly, he emphasized that Assosa University has already been contributing to the sector by providing training and awareness creation to officers and stakeholders, and confirmed the university’s commitment to bridging academic research with practical solutions for road safety.
The event was attended by distinguished guests including Mr. Tigistu Amsalu, Deputy Executive of ERSIFS, Commander Tilahun W/Tinsae, Head of Traffic Accident Crime Research and Analysis at the Ethiopian Federal Police Commission, Deputy Commissioner Yakob Almamun, BGRS Police Commission Crime Prevention Core, and representative from the BGRS Road and Transport Bureau.
This landmark collaboration features Assosa University’s dedication to using research and innovation to address pressing national challenges, while creating opportunities for students and staff to engage directly with real-world issues that impact communities across Ethiopia.
