Assosa University Hosts High-Level Seminar on Reproductive Health in Ethiopia

Assosa University successfully hosted a high-level seminar titled “Reproductive Health in Ethiopia: Challenges and Opportunities,” bringing together experts, academics, health professionals, development partners, and representatives from the Benishangul-Gumuz Regional State to discuss key reproductive health challenges and explore evidence-based solutions through collaboration and knowledge sharing.

‎The seminar was officially opened by H.E Dr. Yared Mulu, President of Assosa University, who emphasized that improving reproductive health is a shared responsibility requiring strong partnerships among universities, government institutions, and development partners. He reaffirmed the University’s commitment to working closely with the Ministry of Health, the Benishangul-Gumuz Regional Health Bureau, and partners to strengthen research, capacity building, service delivery, and student training in addressing critical community health challenges.

‎In his welcoming remarks, Dr. Oumer Sherif, Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer, highlighted the University’s growing contribution to health research, innovation, and community service, including its role in the Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS). He noted that the seminar provided an important platform for scientific dialogue and the exchange of experiences to advance reproductive health in Ethiopia.

‎The seminar presentation, “Reproductive Health in Ethiopia: Challenges and Opportunities,” was delivered by Dr. Alemayehu Hunduma, Head of the Reproductive Health, Family Planning, and Adolescent & Youth Health Desk at the Ministry of Health. The presentation reviewed the current reproductive health landscape at the global, Africa/SSA, and Ethiopia levels, highlighting major challenges, emerging opportunities, and strategic priorities for improving reproductive health outcomes, with particular emphasis on the Benishangul-Gumuz Region.

‎The interactive discussion brought together representatives from the Ministry of Health, Assosa University, Assosa Health Science College, the Benishangul-Gumuz Regional Health Bureau, and partner organizations. Participants underscored the importance of strengthening collaboration in research, education, service delivery, and community engagement to improve reproductive health outcomes across the region.

‎Following the seminar, the Ministry of Health and seminar participa the university compound, the renovetion and visited the Student Clinic and appreciated the commitment of the university and committed to support the University to make it center of excellence in the health and other initiatives.

‎The seminar reaffirmed Assosa University’s commitment to academic excellence, research, community engagement, and strategic partnerships, further strengthening its role in advancing reproductive health and improving the well-being of communities in Benishangul-Gumuz and Ethiopia.
