Assosa University Hosts Panel Discussion on Validated White Mango Scale Management Technology

Assosa University hosted a panel discussion and field demonstration on the project ‘Development and Validation of White Mango Scale Management Technologies for Sustainable Mango Production in Ethiopia.

The event was officially opened by Dr. Abdulmuhsin Hassen, Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer at Assosa University, who emphasized the cultural and economic importance of mango to the Benishangul-Gumuz Region. He highlighted the urgent need to address the challenges posed by the White Mango Scale disease, which has significantly reduced productivity for local farmers. Dr. Abdulmuhsin reaffirmed the University’s commitment to advancing agricultural research, particularly in Mango and Bamboo, as part of its mission to serve as a center of excellence.

Keynote remarks were delivered by Professor Kassahun Tesfaye, Director General of the Bio and Emerging Technology Institute, who underscored the nutritional and national importance of mango production. He stressed the value of integrated pest management and called for translating research findings into practical solutions for farmers, using the Inzi Shederia site as a training center.

Dr. Kero Jemal, representing Adama Science and Technology University Research and Technology Transfer vice President, expressed gratitude to all partners and emphasized that the project represents more than research findings—it is a collective step toward sustainable solutions, rooted in science and strengthened by community voices.

Presentations on the project’s key findings were made by Dr. Ofgaá Jirata (Project PI, ASTU) and Dr. Kumilachew Alemu (Project Co-PI, Assosa University). The event concluded with a site demonstration and panel discussion at Farmer Abdella AlSinja’s farm in Inzi Shederia.
Importantly, the discussion brought together stakeholders, researchers, and concerned bodies from across the agricultural sector, reflecting a strong spirit of collaboration and shared responsibility in tackling community challenges.

This collaborative initiative, funded by the Bio and Emerging Technology Institute and hosted in partnership with Adama Science and Technology University, reflects Assosa University’s dedication to tackling community challenges, supporting farmers, and advancing sustainable agricultural practices in Ethiopia.
