Assosa University hoststhe 3rd Annual National Research Conference
The 3rd Annual National Research Conference was held on the theme “Research for Sustainable Development and Improved Life of the Society”at Assosa Town in three parallel sessions Bilen Dana, Dashen and SemahalHotels from May 19-20/2017.On the opening program, the Research and Community Service vice president of Assosa University,Dr. Haimanot Disassa introduced the honorable guests for the researchers and participants and invited H.E. Dr. Amsalu Bedemo,the president of Assosa University to deliver a welcome speech.
Accordingly, Dr. Amsalu addressed a welcome speech and explained the aim of the conference in line with its theme clearly to the participants.In his speech, he believed that the theme was relevant in the current context of Ethiopia and Assosa University as a 3rd generation.He added that the ultimate objective of doing any research is primarily done for solving societal problem, thereby improving life condition of the people. He linked the theme of the conference to the contribution of research to sustainable development of the society. In addition to this, he described Assosa University and its surrounding that the guests could enjoy in their staying in Assosa.He also informed that 61 research papers were expected to be presented on the conference and among these, 21 research papers were conducted by Assosa University. Lastly, he invited H.E.Mr.Reshid Mohammed, Ethiopian Roads Fund Authority Director and Assosa University Advisory Board Chairman, to open the conference officially.
In his speech, Mr. Reshid appreciated the University to invite him on the opening program and said, “He believes this could be a singularly inspiring and forward looking research conference being undertaken, as it does, right after we collectively conducted ‘Intensive Renewal Process’ that helped Assosa University and its management to figure out their future directions as an efficient and effective 3rd Generation University, which is striving to be sighted as Center of Excellences.”He noted that the theme of the conference was timely and relevant in the sense as Community service is embedded in the act of the establishment of Assosa University, as one of the major pillars, with the ambition that students and academic staff would contribute to the economic, social and political fabric of the country. He added that the alignment of the University with regional government line bureaus and different stakeholders were very crucial for testing and implementing research findings for the improvement of livelihood of the community. Finally, he declared the opening of the conference and let the stage for honorable guests to present their key notes.
Regarding to this, the first presenter was Dr. Habtamu Hailu, the former vice president for Research and Community Service at Addis Ababa Science and Technology University, at present researcher and instructor, presented his key note speech with the title of “Emerging paradigm for University Industry Partnership to Market Research”. The central theme of the presentation focus on ”What should the higher education researches contribute for the community? And it must give answer societal problems as well as should be governed by the community needs.”
The second presenter Dr. Mebratu Gebremariam, instructor and researcher, the former president of Mizan Tepi University and currently Associate professor at Addis Ababa University, presented his key note speech on “Environment Risks”. He noted, “Uncontrolled usage of Natural Resource is damaging our World. The damaging is not just physical it affects the generation.”
Then, Dr. Endrias Geta, senior researcher and Socio-Economic Research coordinator in South Agricultural Research Institute of Hawasa, Ethiopia. His key note speech focused on “Research is highly linked with the development of the society and it assures the society sustainable development.”
Next to the key note speech participants raised questions, constructive comments and suggestions to be forwarded.
The researchers presented their papers in three sessions based on the relation of their departments and hot discussions were made for each and every research papers.
After completing the presentation of 46 among the expected 61research papers, the summary report of all the research papers were presented in line with the strengths, weaknesses, lesson drown/ opportunities and conclusion clearly. On top of this, discussions were made and constructive comments were forwarded from the participants briefly. It was suggested that University management, researchers and policy makers or government should give attention and closely work together in areas of applied researches which will be implemented. Finally, the conference was ended by Certification and visiting the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
